so i decided to run larger valves and me and my dad were searching for valves that were the right length and we found a set of early 289 ford intake and exhaust valves and they just so happened to be the right length so we installed new guides to compensate for the stem difference and now it's off to get the bowls hogged i will keep u guys posted. and will post pics as soon as i take a few shots

Good sleuthing. Using 289 valves is a common mod the racers do, and 283 chev valves also work (1.72/1.50) with the same guide size (11/32").

Using the 283 valves do you have to notch the bores are there any other mods required? Thanks

After I posted my last reply I grabbed my summit catalog and I don't see a 1.720 intake listed for a 283. But I do see a 1.5 exhaust.

1.72s might be 305, but are SBC valves of some sort. Might not be in Summit's catalog, but they sell them. Ferrea makes nice ones.

1.50" exh valve requires bore notch on stock or +0.030" bore, but intake side does not.

Years ago, about 1970/71, my dad used exhaust valves out of some Y block Ford V8. He said they fitted with nothing to worry about.
