Good score or what? I just picked up an 8 3/4 housing, two sets of small bolt axles, open 741 center, new in box Detroit Locker#187sl-14a,new in box Precision gear 4.10 gear set and a complete 8 1/4 open rear assembly out of 72 Demon. all for 550.00. My question is,will the Precision gearset#C8-410fine fit the 741 case?
Thanks,Drew

Good score,
Measure the pinion stem size and that will tell us what it will fit. The 741 housing takes a 1 3/8 pinion stem, the 742 takes a larger 1 3/4 stem, if it has a taper to the stem with the large section @ 1 7/8, it is for the 489 case.

Thanks Doc,Well..It's the tapered stem with the large end being 1 7/8 so I'll have to either find a 489 case or buy a new set of gears.Bummer! But I will have to wait a litte while for this is a budget build-up and I just bought one of those ebay cams from koller dodge.
Thanks,Drew 63GT

Good thing is that the 489 case is the "later unit and still pretty easy to find "cheap". I can grab a center section out of a junk yard for appx $35.00 and sometimes less at swap meets.

In the past I have had the "crush sleeve" tapered pinion 489 units loose pinion bearing pre-load if really "beat-on", like with a big block or 4-speed but these days the rear-end suppliers have a crush sleeve eliminater spacer, this allows the 489 case to be set-up with shims, just like a 742 unit, this makes for a super strong center section.

Thanks again Doc, I will do that,go boneyarding in hopes to find one.If no luck, I'll find one on Moparts hopefully close to me. And I think I will hold on to the 741.Maybe build another rear in a couple years. I'm getting close to having car ready for this summer although, the minor body work will have to wait for next year.
Thanks, Drew
