Thanks for correcting me - I was thinking of a different kind of battery I've got and I apologize for the mistake.

The issue of gas from the battery still stands - I believe the Optima's do have blow-off ports of some kind, but I don't see it in the specs; I would expect both them and your G31 to have them.

Also, the warrenty I've seen on Optima-type batteries seems rather lame w.r.t. the advertising and cost - what's the real-life experience like?

Mister Twiseter - you're using a 4ga 18foot battery-to-starter wire? Could you tell us the drop you actually get while cranking? What do you do for safety against a short?

In my 70 Road runner, and my 67 Barracuda I had the batteries in the trunk. I used the welding wire like you have, and ran my positive cable like normal...thru the passenger compartment along the tunnel. I mage a heavy guage engine to body ground strap. I used the ground wire from the battery to the rear frame rail. I used Marine battery boxes....and for insurance, I ran a vent tube from the top of the boxes, thru one of the center of one of the old drain hole plugs. It was vaccuum hose I used I think. As for protecting aginst shorts? I just secured the cable securly. I never once had a problem.

My 340 barracuda came with the battery already in the trunk. The only thing I don't like about it is that it was installed on the driver's side. Since I'm usually alone or larger than my passenger, I'd have preferred it being on the passenger side for weight distribution. I put a quick release lever on the negative battery clamp, and I disconnect it as a theft deterrent.

Good idea on the quick release. I'll plan on installing one o' them anti-theft disconnects myself, too. I like the idea of weight distribution when mounting it on the passenger side as well. I sure hope this battery isn't too tall to put back there without issues...
