I've been convinced that a slant six is the way to go versus the 360 swap. I'd very much like to have a duplicate set of parts so that I'll be able to send things out for machining without necessarily removing them from my vehicle. I've already replaced the cracked exhaust manifold once and jump at the possibility of extra parts.

My car is a 1974 Plymouth Scamp 225 with a column shifted 904. The deal that I've found is a 1964 Slant Six from a Valiant with a 1965 Column Shifted 904. I'm not sure that the seller necessarily knows what he has, so what am I looking at here? I see that in 1964 the 170 was standard with the 225 optional. So I'd like to know a few things...

1. An easy way to ID a 225 vs 170 for when I go to see the engine.

2. Any ideas on parts interchangeability (head, intake, trans etc.) for both eventualities. Is it worth picking up the engine and trans if it is a 170? Should the transmission provide a good rebuildable core in terms of length and mounting?

I've looked on the Internet a bit, but I haven't found any good resources for this... Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

A pre-'68 engine won't mate to a '68-up automatic transmission without a custom-built torque converter, and a '60-'65 automatic trans will not work in a '66-up car without a lot of gymnastics you'd rather not do. Everything else is interchangeable.

Look at the water bypass hose that runs from the top of the water pump to the bottom-front of the cylinder head. If it's about 3" tall, it's a 225. If it's barely 1" tall, it's a 170.

It sounds like the only parts which might be useful to me are on the top end. Thanks for helping me to spend my money wisely.

There was also a sump change for '68 (true for Australia anyway).

The oil pan's sump position change on US A-Body SL6 engines in 1967
In 1968 the crank's rear flange changed to the larger "hub".
For you 1974 application, your money would be best spent on a 68 thru 75 SL6 engine.
