No affiliation, but one of the things I did today during my lunch break was to change the air filter (old one was NASTAY), fuel filter, and I ran a can of Sea Foam through the carburetor. The filters made a difference in alleviating the engine "bogging down" when I romp on the gas, but running the Sea Foam through made a HUGE difference. The smoke that came out of the exhaust when I did it was incredibly thick. Looked like a roadside bomb had gone off or something. It idles FAR better now, runs smoother, starts up quicker, and accelerates way quicker now. I've got to change the oil and the spark plugs now (granted I planned to anyway), but running that Sea Foam through made the biggest improvement so far. In the morning I'll see if it's more willing to keep running when cold.

I also made a couple small adjustments to the idle speed screws on the carb before I did anything, and again, it helped. I need to get a vacuum gauge and a tach on that though so I can adjust it better. Odds are I'll have to rebuild the carb, in which case I'll order a remanned (I know, they're touch and go, but Napa has units remanned by Holley, so cross your fingers I get a good one) 1920 and lose the EGR system.

Even the ones by Holley, huh? Crap, good thing I didn't order it yet. Guess I'd be better off trying to find a NOS 1920 or getting a couple junkyard ones and rebuilding one, eh?

Well, the Holley II units are "less worse" than some of the yuckier brands, but still, y'know?

What would be the matter with rebuilding the one on the car now?

After reading a few threads on here, the consensus seems to be that the pre-73 1920s are a better carb than the 1945 (which is on there now). Simpler and easier to maintain than the 1945, with no difference in performance between the two. At least that was the impression I had after doing a bit of ssearching around for info about the 1945 when I noticed that that's what's on my engine.

I should pull the 1bbl off the intake that was on my Duster. Do something to preserve it. It only had 32K on it! I am running a BBD of unknown origin. It was rebuilt and I bought it from a friend for $10. He got 2 of them at a yard sale. I got one off a '73 318 in a junk yard. I disassembled/reassembled both of these carbs and the 318 carb wouldn't idle etc.

A Moparts member had a 2bbl Holley that he was running on his 318. He gave it to me. Said it ran great. He is currently running a BBD that the fuel line comes in from the pasenger side. I am thinking it may be from a Poly 318. He will sell it to me when he installs his 402 stroker.

The Chrysler Classic is at Beech Bend in Bowling Green 4/21/07. I am setting my valves and might try that Holley Hot Rod Dave gave me.


Is there a thread on modding BBD's or Holleys?
