Well it's almost time to fire up the new slant and I was wondering what oil I should use, I seem to recall that there was some recent change in the Rotella that makes it less suitable than it used to be. What about Weight?

I picked up a bottle of GM EOS , but it says to use as an assembly lube and specifically says not to use as an additive, did I get the right product it seem like everyone suggests using it as an add to. Right??

Really no replies, I used the search feature and wasn't able to come up with anything definative. so I thought I would pose the seemingly simple question. Unfortunatley this is not yet another thread about milling a head or block, or buying an Erson cam, but it seems like it would provide useful info to many of the other folks building a their first solid lifter engine.

I guess I can shoot in the dark based on what I did find but I was really interested in the EOS, is there more than one product in this line or do I have the same stuff everyone seems to use as an additive. I have seem the cautions on this site about playing home chemist and tinkering with oil formulation and since this stuff specifiacally says not to add to oil I just wanted clarification.

I have spoke with the oldtimers at the local GM dealership and they recomend using the EOS as a break in additive but I would contact the cam manufacterer for recomendations on the actual oil to use for break in.
Car Craft did an article about 2 months ago touting the use of deisel oils in flat tappet engines and also said that some builders use EOS with every oil change.I personally use Castrol Tection deisel oil that has a high content of zinc. I think the addition of EOS for break in along with proper break in procedures from the cam supplier should serve you well.

Do not use a synthetic and do not, as some shade tree "mechanics" will tell you, use straight non-detergent mineral oil. Use a good quality petroleum based engine oil. Those rated for deisel service have more anti-scuff additives, usually zinc, and so work better with flat tappet cams. Synthetics are too slippery and will inhibit the break in process of the cam-lifter contact surface.
