I'm thinking of putting an Electromotive TEC 3 with distributorless ignition on my slant.

Anyone have any thoughts about this?

Have you any experience with the TEC3?

Inquiring minds want to know!!

No, sorry, I do not.
Anyway, it has been used with good results by others.

One comment that I can offer is that one of the major headaches I have experienced with the accel, was in getting the ECU to read the Mopar distributor output. I was never clear on why it did not read, or why it eventually worked. I don;t know if it was a fix of the ECU by ACcel, or rebuilding the distributor several times that made it function. Part of the work was done by a local shop after I gave up on it, and they were not very communicative. . It finally worked, but I dont; know for sure why.

Just make sure that the ignition system you are using is supported, has appropriate wiring harnesses, and tech information to get it all in communication correctly. Make sure you feel good about the level of communication you have with the dealer, and the tech department. Do they have a good manual? Is it well written? Do more questions arise as you read it than you can find answers for. I know it is hard to imagine this, but it would be best to read the literature before you buy. See if they will sell you the manual, or if you can download it on line.

Thanks, Sam.

Your comments are quite insightful and a very useful guide.

One thing about the Electromotive is that it uses its own ignition trigger wheel. There are a few engines where it would work with the stock crank trigger, mostly European cars with the Bosch Motronic (and I've heard some rumors that the Bosch system is a licensed copy of the Electromotive ignition!).

Making aftermarket EFI work with the stock ignition hardware is often one of the biggest challenges on newer cars. Slant sixes aren't usually all that difficult if you stick with distributors, but K-cars and later Mopars can be pretty tricky. Electromotive's system of a standard trigger wheel for everything may make for a bit more fabrication but can also be a help for those who are intimidated by complex electrical setups.

What Matt says sounds encouraging. It is a challenge at best, and eliminating any of the challenges, such as knowing for sure the ignition will work with the ECU is a big plus. Good luck, and please let us know how you proceed.
