If I use the stock cam in a rebuild, and a 1 bbl carter carb, minor porting, dual 2 inch exhausts, what would be the highest compression ratio I could use?

I am not looking at racing, just a little more pep and decent economy.
I know a 2 bbl setup is supposta give better economy, but my goal here is to see if using the stock carb and cleaning the head and bumping up compression, plus the better exhaust flow can make little peppier, more economical engine.
Spending $200 on electronic ignition, a couple bills for a cam and more for a 2bbl conversion, 200 for duals, makes for a grand in mods, and you need to save a lot of gas to justify the expense

Or am I wasting my time with this approach?

It's not about "saving gas" but more about having a powerful and efficient engine at your disposal.

Probably the most bang for the buck would be a rear end swap. A 3.23 would be a lot spunkier on the street without totally clobbering your mileage.

I would leave everything on the engine the same. The 71 thru 77 cam shaft was the best production camshaft and I would use that. If the engine is in good tune with points I would not change it. Mill the head 125 thousand and clean up the ports and yes Dakight is right A 3.23 gear change would pick it up in performance and probally gas millage Thanks Ron Parker :D

True...if you make sure to install it in some position other than "retarded" (factory spec) or "random" (factory production).
