Not to be too rude, but if you don't know what a slant six is, should you be buying a car this old? And for a "hole" in the motor--I'm guessing a rod has come loose, which is usually the end of the motor (especially if you can see the offending part!). Hole in the block means motor replacement time. Need more info to properly diagnose.

Others can better describe what the motor is, but here's a shot: a slant six is an inline 6 cylinder economy motor, manufactured by Chrysler, from 1960 until 1987 or thereabouts. It is very disctinct for its 30 degree "slant"; unlike most inline 6 bangers, when viewed from the front the car, the motor is tilted to the viewers left (or to the passengers side). This allows for a shorter engine height and lower hood (among other things).

The slant six is well known for longevity; it has been long been considered the "standard" for long life motors. They are well known for simply running long past the point that other motors would quit, espeically when "abused" (infrequent oil changes, lack of tune ups, etc).

allpar.com has a good page(s) on the slant six; I'd head there next to find out more, and then do some more reading here.

Hmmmm... reading his post it looks to me that he was asking what is a "slant six hole", not what is a "slant six." nonetheless, I think you adequately answered his question regarding the nature of the problem.

Charger, whether or not you should buy the car, only you can deide. It looks like you'll need an engine at a minimum. Do you have the skill, resources (money) and desire to take on what will likely be a multi-month if not multi-year project? If you can't honestly answer "yes" then you are probably better of to let it pass. It would be a neat project though, if you can stick to it long enough to pull it together.

Growing older is unavoidable but growing up is strictly optional.
