In just got my 4bbl, dual exhaust installed and running on my 73 Swinger, A904 Torqueflight. It is cammed, bored, ported.

I runs great, and shifts OK, firm but not hard, but I would like the shifts to shift at higher rpms, since the power range is increased in the motor. On occasion when I want to run at higher rpms, I just shift manually.

It shifts at about 3200 rpms from 2nd to 3rd when it is floored which is only about 45-50?. but according to the FSM, I should be doing 65-75 before it shifts to 3rd at WOT. My kickdown rod is adjusted as far forward as it can go without hindering the throttle from going WOT.

Can adjusting the kickdown band affect this? I don't want to just start turning screws without some sort of guidence. Is this what the kickdown band is supposed to do? The FSM says how to adjust it, but Idoesn't really say what the pupose is.

Accoding to the FSM, back off the adjusting screw, tighten to 72 in lbs, then back off two turns. But will backing off one turn or three turns affect how high the rpms are when shifting, or will it just shift bad?

Band adjustment will not affect shift RPM. You will need to adjust or modify your linkage so it pushes the kick down lever farther back to shift higher.

Actually, if you've run out of room to adjust the kickdown linkage for higher-RPM shifts, you'll need to make some valve body and governor mods to raise the shift points higher.

Do you have any suggestions? Is this something that is somewhat common to do (i.e. a kit for this). I see from the FSM that the governor assembly consists mainly of the body, inner weight, spring and valve. Lighter spring? different valve as in bigger or smaller valve opening?

I'm glad this is in the FSM section "Service in Vehicle" since I just got the trans back in last weekend after changing out the converter. I don't really want to pull the trans again so soon.

Y'know what, I don't know enough to make specific recommendations. I suggest you contact Pat Blais, tflitepatty@verizon.net , tell him about your engine and trans, and give specific detail about what you'd like to achieve. Ask what mods you can make to the valve body and/or governor to achieve them, and you should receive good instructions back.
