A buddy of mine replaced a /6 in his 66 Val w/ AT. The motor started up wonderfully, but when he put it in gear, nothing. I have all clutch cars, so I had nothing to add. Is there somewhere for him to start looking. Maybe the torque converter?

Check the cheap and easy things first.
Fluid level?
Shift linkages / adjustment?

Dis-connect one of the AT's coolent lines and start the engine, see if the trans is pumping fluid. (a section of rubber hose and a fluid catch can will reduce the mess)
Did he remove or change converters?

His mom's in the hospital, but I'll have him start with these initial checks. Not sure about converter.

Hopefully the converter didn't slip out of place.

This may sound stupid, but, he did remember to put those 4 bolts back in between the flexplate and converter, right? EDIT: Ignore this, obviously he did if the car started otherwise the starter would just spin the converter in place.

Leave the car in reverse when checking the fluid lines as I believe thats when the most fluid is being moved.

Is he using a 66 auto trans, with a 68 or later converter? If yes the splines on the trans input shaft are not engaging the splines inside the converter. The 66 trans has a smaller diameter and different spline count then the later converter.

That's possible Charrlie_S, since I think it was a replacement motor with the 66 transmission. If it is pumping fluid, that would be the next thing to find out.

If it is the input shaft problem, the trans will pump fluid but the car will not move.
