How easy is it to find an aircon setup for a slant in America? I guess I'm really after just the pulleys and compressor brackets - are these readily available from wrecking yards? Cheap?

the stuff in the wrecking yards is probably no good. you dont want to run the old style compressor. most of the after market a/c companies have the bracket for the sanden compressor for the slant 6. Im running after market a/c on my 64 signet. It took some doing, but it fits good.

That said, there are aftermarket mount-and-drive kits for the Sanden/Seltec round-body compressor. Some of these kits are better engineered than others; Bren67Cuda904 on here had to do some fairly extensive reworking and make-working to get his compressor mounted and driven acceptably, and still wound up with some clearance problems due to the extreme forward position he ended up having to put the compressor in. There have also been mount/drive kits to put the brick-shaped York/Tecumseh compressor on a slant. These were pretty common from the '60s-'80s. Again, some of them are better thought-out than others, but on the whole they seem to be at least reasonably well designed, and there are readily-available adaptor plates that put a round-body Sanden or Seltec on York/Tecumseh mounting brackets. I might very well be tempted to use such a setup, if I weren't going to use factory bracketry.

Then there's the option of dispensing with all of the factory equipment (underhood and in-car) and going with one of the complete vehicle-specific systems like these. Donno if there'd be issues installing such a system (or North American-market factory parts) in a RHD Australian vehicle, though. Seems a lot of the parts under the dash are in different locations, and the firewall's different, so there could be potentially large issues there.

The problem with most aftermarket A/C "mount and drive" kits, is the A/C pulley on the crank is in the most forward position. The factory A/C pulley was in the rearmost position. By haveing the pulley mounted in the front position, the compressor needs to be mounted further forward and this can cause interference problems with the fan. See if you can find a mount and drive setup that uses the rear pulley (factory style) setup.

I found a better "aftermarket" kit in a wrecking yard on a 1980 Dodge Aspen.

The Sanden/Seltec round-body compressor is mounted to a small bracket that attaches to the water pump with a spacer for each of the two bolts.

A compressor brace extends down vertically and attaches to the back of the power steering bracket, using one of the power steering bracket bolts.

Another brace extends out horizontally and attaches to the head (just like the V2 compressor bracket).

The compressor is aligned with the power steering pump and uses the pump as an idler pulley. A longer "power steering" belt is required (obviously).

Because the original 1963 Dart power steering pump and brackets are longer than what was used in 1980, I made a small spacer to move the rear vertical brace out. Fortunately, the pump attachment bolt is in the same position and thus required no modification.

Since I no longer need the pulley on the engine side of the harmonic balancer, which the V2 utilized, I have more room for the trigger wheel for the Electromotive TEC 3r sequential multipoint fuel injection I plan to install.

I also avoid the fan/radiator clearance issues presented by the Classic Air Perfect Fit kit. (Should be called the "Almost Fits" kit for 1963 A bodies!!!)

I have no idea who made the "aftermarket" compressor installation kit. There were no markings anywhere on the a/c system, which looks and functions like factory air in the passenger compartment.

Before finding this "aftermarket" compressor kit, I obtained a factory kit from a 1980 Dodge Diplomat. The horizontal brace attached not to the head, but to the intake/exhaust manifold.

I was still trying to determine how I would do this when I found the "aftermarket" kit. The 1963 intake/exhaust manifold does not have the same attaching point.
