 Post subject: Rebuild...somewhat stock
PostPosted: Sat May 05, 2007 1:30 pm
Hello,
I have a spare Slant 6 engine that I am going to have rebuilt. I don't have a lot of time to do this myself, so I am taking it to a reputable place to be rebuilt. This is going to go in my 71 dart, and it is solely used as my daily driver. The car has an 8 3/4 rearend with 2.91 gears.

With that being said, is there anything specific I should add in this rebuild? My friend says to just rebuild it stock with a high-pressure oil pump. The only non-stock mods on the engine is Mopar Electronic ignition, and a new Holley 350CFM carb.

Would a stock rebuild due? Or is there a specific cam/crank I should get? Is there anything I should do or buy that you guys highly reccomend? Like I said...this is just going to be a daily driver.

Thanks!

A stock oil pump is fully adequate for a stock rebuild. A high pressure/high flow pump is not needed and it adds stress to the oil pump gear which is already a common point of failure. If it goes it more often than not takes the camshaft with it.

Growing older is unavoidable but growing up is strictly optional.

Ok, I will stick with the stock pump.
Do you have any advice of any "upgrades" I should do to improve the longevity of the engine? Cam? Crank?

Milling the head or the top of the block to give a true compression ratio of 8.5 to 9.0 will help power and economy. The slant was rated at a 8.2-8.4 from the factory, but I have never seen one that high, in real life. Some of the ones I have checked were actually in the high 7's. You or your machine shop will have to measure, to find out how much to cut.

Hmm good idea.

Interesting question...
My engine block is stock, it has never had work done...the engine was originally in my 71 dart and still is. I have a spare head that I would like to change-out, that will be suffice instead of rebuilding. My current head has problems...and I need to drive the vehicle

I can take this head in and get it rebuilt, but since I don't have an engine to measure, does anyone know how much I should have them shave off the head to get a true 8.5-9 compression ratio? The head is untouched stock, just like my engine. If someone could take a measurement and let me know that would be GREAT!

Can't be done. Factory build tolerences sucked. They were all over the place. The measurement of someone elses parts is not relavent to your parts. My suggestion, in that case, would be to mill .080 off the head. That will increase the compression and not cause any problems with pushrod length. The aftermarket head gaskets are about .020 thicker then the original factory gasket, so your net gain will be about .060, which should get you between the 8.5 and 9.0 range. However you will not know for sure what the ratio is without doing the measurements, on the head and block.
