Hey guys,
I started my engine up, and was in the process of setting the lash. It was tapping pretty good, so I ran it a little bit to get it hot. After I was through, I pulled my dipstick out the check the oil level and......nothing. I got scared at first, thinking I had leaked all my oil out. Then I looked real close at the end of the stick. About 2in. of the stick is broke off.
Is this bad? Could I have damaged anything? I'm fixing to change to break-in oil, so I think I can fish it out then. But did that little piece do damage on it's ride to the oil pan?
Thanks,
BBBanjo

It shouldnt hurt anything, it happened to me, the last time I changed the oil it came out on its own. Had I tried to get it out on purpose, I would still be trying to get it out.

I don't see how it laying at the bottom of the oil pan could hurt anything. It might be different if the oil pump laid on the pan bottom like many other engines, but even then there's a screen to keep out the chunks. On our slants the oil pump is up up and away...I'd say run it with confidence. Davey

Very common, broke 2 in my life time, still in the engines pans with no harm done.Good luck fishin' most end up in the pickup screen.
Again bend the tube so that the stick stays away from the crank.318's vary in length. You can cut and remark the stick yourself if you don't find the right one.
