I've always torqued the cylinder head bolts when hot. If I'm assembling the head, what do people recommend for threadlocker, thread sealer and initial torque (cold)- I'm guessing one should re-torque when hot. Thanks for your input. I looked for a specific article on this forum, but didn't notice any.

I have never torqued the bolts hot, since the new gaskets do not need retorque. No threadlocker is needed, and I usually go higher (75-85 ft-lbs) than the FSM spec. I use oil on the threads, which some people don't like, but I've never had a gasket/bolt problem up to 11:1 and I've done 30-50 head swaps on Slants.

Maybe I'm thinking of some of the mainifold studs that need thread sealer because they are open to the water jacket?

The end near the thermostat?

I'll have to check the head I'm working on because I was sure that when I blew out the holes they all went into the water jacket. I'm fairly sure that more than 2 of them did.

Growing older is unavoidable but growing up is strictly optional.

All the manifold studs go into the water jacket but some heads have so much rust build-up, they don't leak coolent out the hole when the stud is pulled.

On head torque, I always recheck the head's torque after the first heat cycle. I never use any sealer or thread locker. I do put some anti-seize compound on the bolt threads before installing the bolts.
