What is the cheapest and easiest way to give your slant six more performance?
It is a 1962 170.

Probably the most bang for the buck is the Super Six two barrel intake swap if you can find one cheap. Do not under any circumstances use a parts store rebuilt carb for this swap unless you personally know the guy at the factory who put together that carb, the owner of the factory, and happen to be the only doctor who can save the life of the owner's firstborn son.

I have a 63 Dart with a 170 and I added a super six, full two inch exaust, electronic ignition with recurved distributor and MSD Blaster module and even with the bad rings it runs great and pulls 70 on the interstate with 3.23 gears with ease and still picks up 22-23 mpg on the hiway but only about 17 around town due to the weak state of the rings.
It cost me about $ 400 but I did all the labor myself including welding up my own exaust with mandrel u-bends from Summit and straight pipe from the local muffler shop.I also had the distributor in my parts pile so thuat was a non cost.
With an engine in a good state of repair it should make a very noticable improvment in mileage and performance.
There are a lot of helpful people here that can help you with your improvements.

Definately make sure it's running prime first. Do a tune up with quality parts, adjust the valves to spec, etc.
My '62 170 has a super six, two into one exhaust (2 1/4 tailpipe, 2" off the manifolds), and the HEI electronic ignition conversion. It's no drag car (and probably never will be) but its great for around town and it gets decent mileage, too (18 mpg city). The most expensive part of the whole thing was the exhaust fabrication (prollay cost me $600 total for the whole build), but if you have the skills like HyperValiant then you could definately get it done cheaper.
