Was it really metal or welding slag?

One thing I learned a long time ago was that no matter whose shop did the machine work all parts need to be cleaned and checked before assembly.

Slag or actual weld will still be harmful if it clogs the screen or hits a cylinder wall. If they managed to leave slag in an engine who knows whats in the bearings.

Sorry, I know my cup is always half empty. I'm being paranoid but this situaiton just irks me for some reason.

It's all good. I just have the view of "trust no one" especially after the ordeal I have been through with the "best Mopar engine guy in the area".

It was welding slag, or dingleberries as welders call them. It was just sloppy work and whoever was responsible was "talked to". I should send them a bill for the labor of all the stuff I've cleaned up and fixed for them Since they told me the waranty will apply, I think I'm going to run with it and hope for the best. Trying to stay positive since I have so much money, time, and emotion sunk into this project. My father, who bought me the car when I was 16 and helped me get the project started passed away on Monday night. Working on this car is my only distraction and I know he would have loved to see it running. Nothing else matters a whole lot.

My heart goes out to you Dave. Hang in there and let the emotions come as they will. You will get through this as many of us have. And I am not talking about the engine. I believe your Dad's spirit will be hanging around guiding you through this, and you are right, the engine rebuild is the perfect thing to concentrate on for now..

Sorry to hear your loss, but keep your father in spirit. My dad passed away in his prime age (around 60) in 2004 due to long term low level work exposure. He had books of performance stuff and magazines (like MotorTrend etc) that I used to read when I growing up and tinker with mowers.

My brother do tinker with cars too and I just started to tinker with caravan 2.2 for past few years since 2003.
