Well I picked up an extra 225 today, solid lifter, but it has the peanut head. I bought it at a good price, for use as a back up. Now what is the deal with the peanut head? Lack of spark plug selection? I just want to build it to stock specs. I have not looked at it yet (need to pick it up) but could the head be cut to accept a different style of plug?

I think you can probably find spark plugs that will work fine; I don't think that's really a major issue. The peanut head is heavier by a few pounds which is probably of more concern if you're racing.

I have a peanut plug head on my new rebuild. You can buy all kinds of plugs for it.
I run NGK UR4GP's/6630 plugs gapped at .040 with excellent results.
I have run Chev Delco plugs, R45TS and R43TS, Champions, etc......there is no plug shortage. I think it must be a myth.

Good, I was reading a long post about lack of selection on spark plugs for the peanut head. The engine looks like its in good shape, the head is off so I got a peek inside. Thanks for the replies.

If you use AC plugs and can run a 43 or colder try a CR43ts or CR42ts. They are the same as the normal versions but more durable with heavier electrodes. It is a truck plug and they do not make them any hotter than 43. Price is the same.

I have had very good luck with the CR AC plugs and run them anytime they fit. You cannot go wrong with the correct NGK plug in any event. Like any plugs check them all before installing and do not use any that look like they have been dropped or are already visibly cracked.

I doubt if a peanut head weights more then the drool tube head. Less metal for one thing. Also a '80 head weights less then a '78 head. At least the ole grunt-o-meter indicates this.

75-80 head will be the heaviest, but probably not much more than 5 pounds over the drool tube. At least that is what I have found from paying to ship them all over the country.
