Ron, I have to wonder why you are using the 2.2 pistons and long rods in a turbo motor. That is going to give you quite a bit of compression that you really don't need with a snail. :? :?

Well Bagel they are 2.2 turbo pistons with the deep dish put that combo on 225 rods and see what your compression will be. About 6 to 1. Plus I traded some pices for this project and at this time do not want to put in custom forged pistons. The turbo engine Gary is building is the stock engine that we took out four years ago. It has never been decked but my race head has been milled I think 40 thousand. On my race engine in my car now Gary milled the head and decked the block to get the compression we were shooting for. We are shooting for 8 to 8.5 to 1 on the turbo engine do think I will have problem doing this. Thanks Your racing friend Possum :D PS you have never had a car that would run 12.47 on engine alone have you. Doint be sad ole buddy I can show you the path that will get you off that ole nitrios dope.

Ron, Mike said my 2.2 turbo piston/198 rod motor was right at 10.8-1 with an undecked block and head. Those pistons will be about -.028" down in the hole on an undecked block.

Doc says turbo 2.2 pistons + 198 rods = 8.73 compression.

I put Federal Mogul forged pistons on stock 225 rods and calculated 8.5:1 compression, and I have had trouble getting out of detonation. I am thinking about going with a water/meth injection set up. That should kill it, and perhaps allow me to run regular gas on the street.

I don;t know what my intercooler came from, but it is not as simple as bigger is better. Too big equals turbo lag. It really should be matched to your turbo. I do not know how to calculate that, but there are books and articles out there that will guide you through that. After studying the math for all this, I gave up on figuring out anything scientific, and simply used a Buick Grand National turbo, which seems to be very nicely sized for the slant, and an unknown intercooler. I am told that cooler is better on your intake charge temp, and somewhere in the range of 140 degrees is a good, and reasonable target temp for that. I did have larger inlet and oulet tubes welded in as restrictions = heat, which defeats the purpose of the intercooler. Also, bends in the pipes = heat, so make them as straight and un-convoluted as you can.
Sam

I had a Vortech on a 5.0 Mustang, 17,000 miles and the front main bearing was destroyed each bearing was progressively better and the rear main bearing look almost normal. I was running 12 lbs of boost, at 5-6 lb of boost the front bearing last much longer. I currently have a turbo on my slant six it works ok in a slant although I don't like hanging the turbo off the exhaust manifold. There has been some minor issues with exhaust leaks.

Hey Bagel we talked to Mike last Nite and he was of the same opinion, 2.2 pistons on 188 rods. to much compression. I need to talk to a couple of other people that do turbochargers and see . Mike suggested 3.5 flat top pistons for the project. A 225 engine with 225 rods would be about 8.3 to 1 or what ever. Your Racing Friend Possum :D

I'll get back to you when I have my GT40-82 turbo up and running. It's about the size of my battery and I will have to see what sort of lag I have with it.

While an intercooler that's too big may increase turbo lag, I'm not sure you can fit an intercooler that's too big into an A-body without putting the radiator in the trunk.
