I have noticed that when I put lighter weight oil in my 225 that it runs a little quicker. Does this mean that my passageways are getting clogged up or does mine just run better with a lighter oil and could I go to a 5w30?

It may just be from less friction, nothing to do with passages. I would stick with a 10-30 or straight 30 if it does not get too cold. Even 10-40 if that what you have. Maybe 20-50 for towing in extreme heat.
I would not use 5-30 in anything but a more modern engine that calls for it or for an older engine in extreme cold.

I have noticed the same thing and my passages are super clean, new rebuild. It must be drag from the crank. Lighter oil really seems to help. I am running 10-30 Valvoline Synthetic. Other friends are using 10-30 Mobil One. Either seems to really help.

Yea, I have 10w30. So, I might go to 10w30 synthetic.
Thanks for the replies!

Oil is much better, today, but back in the '70's I did a test. Ran my car (65 Valiant 170 slant stock) at the track. Made 3 runs with 10-30 oil, then drained and refilled with the same brand of 30 weight, made 3 more runs. Then went back to 10-30, and 3 more runs. The runs with 10-30 were an average of 1 1/2 thenths (.150) quicker.

has anyone considered a crank scraper to wipe excess oil from the crank? this can have 2 benefits, it keeps more of the oil in the sump and it reduces the spinning mass of the crankshaft by removing the oil thats wound up around it. theyre really easy to make from just a bit of sheet steel and a bandsaw.

So, even if I use a lighter oil I would get the same protection as the older heavier oil? What weight of oil are you using?

You've done this on your slant and do you have any pics you can show?

I run 10-30 oil in everything I own. Race car and tow truck with over 300,000 miles on the engine.

Slant six crank scrapers are available from www.crank-scrapers.com

no, i havent personally but its not uncommon to add them to a vehicle that sees the twisty track often or when doing a performance build. i was suggesting and asking at the same time sort of, i'd too like to know if anyone here has had any success with them? oil windage is more of a higher rpm problem, but if you're running a heavier oil i could see it happening at lower speeds as well. just tossing in some of my own thoughts to the mix.

What is HD30 weight compared to 10w30 and 5w30, is it lighter?

Only time i use anything other than 10-30 is during Canadian winters (-30 Celcius) when i switch to 5-30, although it's not necessary.

Hd-30 should be the same as fresh 5-30 or 10-30 when hot. The only difference with the multigrades is they are thinner when cold.

The multigrades get thinner with age as the additives break down, so 5-30 can get pretty thin between changes.

I would not even think about using 5-30 in an older design engine in the summer.

Charlie's link made the thread pop up on my log.

I got a hand-written letter out of the blue from a SL6 owner/racer that bought one for his 66 Barracuda in August 2005 -- Rafe Grigar. I talked to him on the phone and he is a retired auto shop instructor. I will paste in what he wrote below. I also recently updated the design to dual scrapers. Doing the same this morning for a straight six Ford going down under. I cannot believe the misinfo circulating re the AMC six and scrapers -- sigh. Wait -- I can.

Greetings:

I purchased a slant 6 crankscraper from you about 2 years ago. It made more improvement than any other single item in the engine. Also I have not had any oil pump and crown gear failures since then.

I would like to purchase one for my wife's little Red Express Truck. It has a small block 360 Mopar engine in it. Enclosed is a check ...

Thank you very much,

Darrell L. Grigar

Mansfield, TX

I am pretty sure DArt270 mentioned a crank scraper in his last slant build plans. It is worth a proven 5 HP or so. More if your engine is high RPM. I did not do it, and wish I had. I was just getting impatient to get the thing together at that point. The car hobby is so full of delayed gratification, that at some point you just have to say, "OK go for it".
