Now for me, if the perception is that it is going to be hard to build a slant, that makes me want to do it more, not less. That's just the way I am wired. If 'easy' is the goal, go buy a new, high tech fast car.

Since this signature picture was taken, I have had the hood painted black. The guys at the body shop swarmed around that car, and just shook their heads in amazement as they were staring at the slant with a turbo on it. There were all kinds of exotic fast cars in the bays being worked on at that time. That was actually a surprise to me. And they kept asking questions about how I knew to do this, etc.

The appeal to me is working out the problems. It keeps me young, vital, and involved in the world. I went to EFI just to keep my brain in growth mode, and sharp. If I am working out something on the car, I go to bed thinking about the solution, and wake up eager to get into the day, and home to work on the car. This is worth far more than the ultimate goal of going fast. It is the process that counts for me, not the goal. Once I reach my goal, I might sell the car just to have another project to keep me involved.

Exactly. A special kind of individual. Few and far between.

On the other hand, there are people that only lose sleep over problems and want to got to bed know that it will work the way it did today. For them, finding solutions is a drag.

To each his own.

BTW, I'm like you. I enjoy finding the solution, and doing it different than everybody else.

the fact that you might be a rich kid who can break and throw away his toys ain't gonna take you too far...

You came in with a cocky attitude, talking heaven about your engine guy, dismissing every clever comment you got along with other not-so-good input... big block power blah blah....

Now you're stuck with a motor that's pretty much worthless, you don't know and can't tell for sure what's inside... your math gives one CR and your max timing setup points other side and your cranking pressure to a third different direction...

in the meantime you're concerned about trying to make SSD look bad for his spark plug recommendation instead of watching over your machinist's and mechanichs shoulders...

Not happy with this, you start a fight with whoever try to aim your mess in SOME direction, and even bluff about using Sandy's slant behind your tractor... Why bother with sandy's engine when you have your own thing that would perform great for that purpose?

Here's a clue for 'ya and I'm not gonna charge you nuttin for it: next time you have a pile of money and attitute, just be sure you're giving the pile of money to the right people, here's some cues that you may wanna add to your notebook so you can start running when you hear "this is real world dyno, not inflated numbers"... or "yes, sure, we'll get your crank stroked to 4.5" and etc etc.

I'm bettin you have a lot more than $4k in that motor... and I doubt you'r getting half of what your asking for it.

you might as well drop the stupid rich college kid "I don't give a rat's ass" attitude and start listening to the folks, they might not be polite, you've irritated many people, but they gonna point you in some direction that your court of "smart" builders can't even start to think about.

Oh yeah, yank the slant and drop a RB in there... you'll be worse off and that beautiful barracuda notchback body you have there will end up deformed.

If you still have some of that big pile of money, give the guys at hughesengines a call and let them advise on a stroker SB that would be a lot more efficient than a RB, will weight less, you don't have to trouble your mind to come up with stupid ideas such as the electro-wind-powered power steering because you'll be able to have 400+ CI worth of street driveable muscle and retain basic and advanced comfort like power brakes, steering and AC.

I don't stop by for a day or so and WOW!

Bren, I completely support your decision, and agree that you are not cut out to build and modify slants. Real slanters "get it". You're still part of the crowd that says "Why bother with a slant six? Drop in a V8!" And, judging from your posts regarding your expectations about this engine, you seem REALLY preoccupied in what others think. It seems like your focus on this build was just to show everybody (the V8 crowd) that they were wrong, rather than build a really nice slant to enjoy. Just out of curiosity, how old are you?

I probably spent HALF of what you did on my long rod engine. Although I admit I was curious what the horsepower would be during the build, now that it's done I could care less. I LOVE driving it, it sounds great, and pulls down 17 mpg on my daily commute with very little tuning. Is it fast? Compared to what? Again, I don't care. No matter what you do, someone will always be faster.

Me, I wouldn't bother with dropping in a big block. I'd just buy a "fast" car to begin with, and leave the car-building to others. Sorry the little slant has wasted your time and money. Best of luck, and enjoy that gas bill with the big block.

I spent a long day in the bush falling poles today.....thinking about this damn engine.......

Heres what I spent my time on: When I put bigger valves in my head I radiussed around the valves to promote flow. I only milled enough off the head to clean it up . My chambers all started ~66cc~ . By carefully radiussing we were able to balance all the chambers at 77cc. I then milled the block to get my target CR . I left the head with as "tall" a chamber as possible to keep the Valves clear of the bore and promote flow.

If Eileen has 65cc chambers ....were the chambers relieved when these huge valves were installed? At 65cc there must be a ton o meat left to work those chambers for flow and drop a few CR points.

There is no reason not to take 3 thou off the tops of the pistons or rework the dish to get a few more ccs

this is getting discouraging, i have been a slantsix lover since my father bought home a 69 valaint with a 170 auto when he worked at the local chy dealer.when you hear slantsix you think reliable/hard working not performance but when you research the history and see the 170 hyper pack and what it did you cant stop thinking that the sky the limit on what this engine(in all its different configeration)can achieve.i have built many motors over the years and on the street a slantsix mildly modified can hold its ground with any nonsupercharged smallblock, if all this post has come to is trying to convince a nonbeliever of the true love of a slantsix owner it should end now. one thing i have to say that when it comes to comparing bb and slantsixs i think of mel burner with his 13.11et at 103mph beating bb everythings in the old super stock class and i rest my case. thanks to all the true slantsix lover

He is one of the old time slanters. Has been racing slants, longer then most of the board members have been alive. Unfortunatly, he, like Seymour Pederson, is not online.

I knew a Bruner family in Kansas. I wonder if they were related. Suzie Bruner married Roy Gregory, who is now deceased, and had a bunch of kids in my gneration ,then moved back to the DC area the same time my Dad did,, where the remaining family still lives. That's such an unusual name, I never heard it other then this family, and your reference. Where does Mel hail from? We aught to get him on this board. Does he not have a computer?
