Tell us more about what we were seeing. What engines, how fast, who won, who was driving, etc, etc,
Sam

I didn't think it was a slant. 2 things gave it away; the position of the sccop centered on the hood and the sound of the engine.

Mel Burner?
Merill Bruner :D
He is one of the old time slanters. Has been racing slants, longer then most of the board members have been alive. Unfortunatly, he, like Seymour Pederson, is not online.
Yep, Merrill holds the title of "Grandfather of Slant 6 racing", and deservedly so. He and his son Gary have many, many accomplishments in the Slant racing world. Merill is a really neat guy too. :D

I want to thank everyone for this thread. It's the most amusing thing I've read in a long time. And the life lessons. Too bad we can't apply Bren's "nucular option" in Iraq. Or can we? I guess that makes Rummy's smaller, leaner deployment equivalent to a /6. When all the time we needed a V10. As the I Ching says, "great plans with meagre knowledge seldom escape disaster."

I'm glad you are amused. :D We are kind of now to the point where I think we are just trying to keep the thread going so we can set a record of some kind. Continuing the analogy you started, putting a BB in a small A body seems about as subtle, clever, and thoughtful as strapping a bomb to yourself and walking into a crowded restaurant, and setting it off.

Sam, Merill and family are in eastern Tenessee.

Merill has built a ton of cars over the years and many of them have or end up with small blocks in them.

I'd get rid of my small block A-body before my /6 A-body. The /6 is almost as quick and easier around town. Seriously, I've learned a lot from this thread, as I have from all the others, that's why this forum has replaced TV in my life. :o

I have an idea that may make everyone happy including myself. I am still investigating the 440 BB idea and all it costs. It will likely still happen but it will take sometime to locate all the parts. This time I will not throwing money at everything, but shopping for the best deal through E-Bay and other avenues over at least a one year period. The motor stays in untill all parts are in hand. During that time I will be tuning the slant, unless someone really wants it as a complete engine, in which I'll reinstall the orignal stock engine untill the 440 swap is ready. If for some reason I get hit in the head and decide to keep the slant, I can sell off the BB stuff as a swap package for someone A-body.

Of all the options, I think a big block is the worst. My preference, and I realize it isn't my car, would be to keep the slant and make it scream. I really believe it can and will. Mid 14s should be no sweat and low 13s doable with a little help here and there. Next to that I would opt for a small block Magnum. They are available up to 440 cu in, weigh less than a big block, and already have roller cams and lifters. EFI is a slam-dunk piece of cake and turbos and blowers are readily available. You could get virtually all of the performance with none of the drawbacks of a big block. And, on top of that, your weight penalty is much smaller, probably less than 100 lbs. You would still have to reinforce the chassis but not because of the weight of the mill but because of the massive torque and horsepower it would apply.

I've sorta been following this engine and talks about it all. My only comment is the fact that yeah bb will make more power, I think few honestly will deny that. But there is still the fact that I don't know how many engines you've built, but a v8 is 1/4 more the frustration of a sl6. If you can't tune this one why is a bb going to make so much more power? My uncle who taught me about engines told me to build the original engine cause once you do that you can do anything. He runs a 600hp 408 and started with 6's too. So... think about that a 18 year old cranking out 15.8 with a slant on a 1000 dollar budget, running a four speed. You got a nice car and one day I will put a v8 in mine too, but giving up is giving up, so good luck with the bb tell us me how it works out, outta be some good numbers. wes

Not to get to involved in BB talk, but a 440 dressed in AL head, intake, and water pump and housing is 5 lbs heavyier than a stock small block. Yes you can dress the small block in AL and be even lighter, but on the street there is no replacement for displacment. The 440 can be stroked to at least 500.

Does anyone make a mass air flow throttle body kit?

There's a late model Dakota around that drives to the track, switches to racing tires and open exhaust, runs 10s then switches back and drives home. That's a 4000+ lb vehicle that is street driven daily on a small block, a 408 stroker, and races on weekends.

I really like the idea of tuning on this slant until the 440 is done. However, I am going to vote small block here also. Then I am going to suggest that once you get your v-8 built, pick up another car, and have a v-8 and a slant. I did that for ten years, and had fun with both. In the end I sold the v-8 and kept the slant. Partly because I like red better, but also because it was different, and more of a challenge, and absolutely handled better.
