 Post subject: engine priming

well i am getting ready to put my slant back in my truck, i was wondering what is the proper way to prime a engine and what other things should i do before i start it? thanks for any help.

As far as the oil pump is concerned, did you pack it with vasoline when you put it together? If you didn't; since these pumps are external anyway, I'd consider popping off the block and packing it with vasoline now. Assuming that you did, you're set. As far as cranking goes, I'd leave the coil wire off until I registered oil pressure on the gauge.

Double check all of your fittings. Keep a fire extinguisher handy....

Since the oil pump gear is meshed with the cam, you cannot pre-oil like a v8. I just left the plugs out and spun it with the starter until I got pressure on the guage.

I know a guy who pre-oiled a slant 6 with some gadget he made. It's either a modified oil filter or somthing that is used in place of the oil filter- I just can't remember. If you want, I'll take a chance and ask him again how he did it(he's a miserable, cranky SOB, but he IS good with a wrench)
