Just lately when my 225 /6 is warmed up and I crank it to start the engine will kick back against the starter.
I want to get this fixed ASAP before it breaks something.
It really jerks back against the starter drive!
The engine will run fine after this random occurence.
As I just stated it does not do this all the time, but when it does it will nearly stop the starter for a second then continue cranking after that until it starts.
I suspect that spark plugs are the culprit but when I inspected them, they looked fine.
I think the first step will be to pull those AC Delco plugs and put some Champions back in.

Any thoughts?

Check your initial timing and also check to see if your mechanical advance mechanism is in good working order. Kickback against the starter is often caused by overly-advanced timing. However, it can also be caused by incandescent-hot carbon in the combustion chamber. There'd have to be a whole heck of a lot of carbon in your combustion chambers to get to this point and stay there after shutdown, but it can happen.

As for spark plugs, I'd skip the Champions (quality continues to drop) and the ACs, and go directly to NGKs. What year cylinder head are you working with?

Don't worry about it, I have been running AC's in my duster for 3 years (44K on these guys), regapped once, no noticeable electrode wear...they ran noticeably better than the NGK UR-4's I pitched in the garbage can after 5,000 miles....Champions aren't to great anymore...

I personally prefer Autolites in my junk. Every time I run NGK's I take out a piston. May not be the plugs fault though, prolly just guilt by association.

First thing I would do is check the distributor for wear. Base timing could be the culprit, as well as a stretched timing chain.

I would look at a timing issue if you pulled the plugs and said they looked fine they should be a light brown on the insulators maybe choclate. Black is not good or white is not good.Thanks Ron Parker
