Last fall a friend and I rebuilt my 225 (my first rebuild! yikes!). The engine runs great, and, every thing seems fine, except for a small, (at present), oil leak that has developed at the front passenger corner of the pan. It appears that that front rubber gasket has "split" on the corner, and is protruding out, this is probably do to me putting too much gasket sealer on when I put the pan on. Will cleaning the outside surface, and, appling some "high temp" sealer stop the leak?

I think that they are supposed to leak there.

I have smeared Ultra Blue Permatex on things like that to stop leaks. Next time, be careful not to overtighten the pan bolts - that's probably what did it.

I've tried various things with varying levels of success. When I've tried torqueing the v. cover bolts and oil pan bolts to service manual specs they almost always bend the crap out of the sealing surface of the cover/pan rail. So, I don't use factory specs for those particular fasteners. In the future, I suggest getting some aftermarket (Moroso, ARP) quality bolts with the serrated integral washered heads so they don't back-off. And then use a 1/4" drive ratchet and socket tools to tighten the fasteners. There is less chance of 'strongarming' the bolts and you have much better 'feel'. Since the bell is already rung in your case, I agree with the suggestion to loosen the bolts, clean off the surfaces with brake cleaner, and squirt in that second generation style silicon goo, let it set up a little, snug-up the bolts. then wait for it to cure and then carefully tighten them up. The silicone sealer is pretty slippery until it cures, so you don't want to squirt out the gasket and end seals by tightening it prematurely.
