I posted a ? about this at clifford and in turn got the suggestion for posting it here. On my 63' I would like to put 4 on the floor in place of my column shifter. I've heard the A-833 tranny is the way to go. I'm not if this is compatable for becoming a street hot rod.

I just finished a conversion from a 904 to an 833 on a 1965 Valiant. It really wasn't that hard. Gathering up the parts took longer than the conversion. Find a "3 on the tree" car for the clutch linkage. The bell housing is hard to find but they're out there. I see 64-66 833's that have the 64-66 output flange on e-bay all the time. They're VERY heavy.

I don't know about the 63. How is it different from a 65 a-body? I do know that now that I'm done I'm having a great time. It's a blast to "row" a slant 6. I do kind of miss the 904 when I'm stuck in traffic. Next for me is a 8 3/4 posi rearend with 3.23 gears. Best of luck. You'll fine the guys here very glad to help.

I am not sure what in your mind is a 'street hot rod'. My '66 Cuda started out equipped as a manual stg sl/6 stick, 3 on the tree. I parted out a '74 Duster that provided big-bolt pattern frt disks, m. cylinder, and a 3.21, 8&1/4 r. axle with 10" drums. I swapped in some '76 Dart Police T-bars. I also swapped in a no shifter stg column tube, and an early A-body 4 spd tunnel. I installed an A833 from '69 Dart that burned. I also scratch built a HD Z-bar of my own design. With a stone stock 225(with a coupla yards on it) it is peppy and fun to drive. I personally think sl/6 4 spds rock, but maybe that's just me.

There is no signifacant difference with the 63 chassis so if you find parts from a 64-66 4-speed car, everything will install easy. (not quite a "bolt-in" because you have to do some cutting on the floor)
The 833 swap is the way to go for someone with a limited budget / experence, just find the parts and get to work. (Most any year A-Body 4-speed can be made to work, the main differences are the linkage rods, speedo cable and the drive shaft)

I'm not looking to make the car run 9's or 10's in the 1/4, but I do want it to run fast and solid. I guess by solid I mean a tighter suspension. The 4spd I know would help me rid of that 2ooo rpm difference shifting into third, which is a drag trying to get on the freeway sometimes. Does anybody manufacture the 833 anymore or is it up to personal luck in getting a hold of one?

I don't know what neck of the woods you hail from, but up here in Washington, you see at least several at every swap meet. They are usually priced in the $150-$250 range(minus shifter & linkage). But I think most of them never sell. I bought mine for $50, and I personally don't think they're worth much more than that. The supply is plentiful, they rarely break, and they're pretty heavy to be hauling back and forth to swap meet after swap meet.
