Or electrical opportunity? I had a problem the other morning, I went to start the dart and all I got was a fast clicking. A friend suggested the starter relay, I changed that and all was well. Today, I drove around a bit, came home, stopped in front of the garage, and it dies. Fast clicking again. What are the possible problems? Another problem, I dont think they are related, the car has been surging at lower rpm, but higher rpm its fine. I think that may be the carb. I will never know until I can reliably start it.

Clean all the battery cable connections. At the battery, the solenoid, and the ground at the block.

I have had the batter on the charger for an hour or so, now the car starts up. Could the battery not be accepting a charge? Bad alternator? I cleaned all the contacts between the battery and starter, thanks Charrlie.

What year is your Dart?

I'm inclided to say ether the volt reg or alt....but.....

What does your alt gauge read at higher rpm, at lower rpm without
a load and
under load with headlights on.

Hey, Jeff. The car is a 72 dart. The gauge on the dash doesnt move when I increase the rpm, when I turn the headlights on, the gauge goes way down. I put a multi meter on the battery, shows 12v at idle or higher rpm, shows around 11v with the headlights on.

Your charging system isn't working. Could be a bad alternator, a bad regulator, faulty wiring, or a combination of the above. You can test the alternator by following the instructions in this post.

Once you find the culprit, shop carefully for replacement parts. The "remanufactured" alternators you can get at the parts store are trash.

I did the test on the alternator, no change whatsoever. That link mentions a wavering needle. This gauge needle did not waver before or after the test. It did move when I turned the lights on.

Sounds like a dead alternator. Brand-new ones are readily available on eBay, so it's not worth buying the "remanufactured" junk unless you have to have an alternator right this instant because you're relying on the car for daily transport. Try this one.
