I'm finally going to be driving my '71 Valiant around town regularly and I need to get the noisy rocker adjusted. They're manual adjustments right? Here's what I THINK I need to do:

1. Remove valve cover
2. start car
3. adjust rockers from #6 to #1
4. try not to get oil all over the place.
5. replaced with new gasket and valve cover.

Second question.

I passed the Colorado Emissions but had to do a quick adjustment because my Co2 levels were a little too high at idle and 2500 RPM. Got it to pass on the second try. The tech who did the inspectioin suggested a total carb rebuild, and to use a ( 1 size smaller)smaller jet for better gas mileage at altitude. He said I'm dumping too much gas and am fouling my plugs and oil faster than I should. I'm not getting good mileage at all. I have no idea what size jet is in there (Holley 1920) Any suggestions on either issue would be greattly appreciated.

THIS THREAD has instructions for valve adjustment.

I had an 82 Dodge Ram with a 318 that I took from Oklahoma to Denver. When I took it in for emissions testing the CO an HC were too high. I replaced the jets with a size smaller and retested. It was better but still failed. Since I was moving the right direction I went another size smaller and it passed easily.

Definitely rebuild the carb, which sounds like it's running way too rich right now (Holley 1920s tend to do this when they need a build), or install a new (not "remanufactured") one. As for jetting, you'll probably find something between a 56 and a 58 jet in there. Dropping down two sizes might not be a bad idea since you're at about 5,500 feet altitude.

And run NGK # ZFR5N spark plugs without the metal ring washers.
