I'm trying to get the '69 Valiant running. I rebuilt the carb and replaced the mounting gasket. I'm getting a loud whistling from the carb and the engine is misfiring with little pops coming from the exhaust. I've tightened the carb down to the manifold. I replaced the PCV and vacuum advance hoses. If I take off the air cleaner and let the car idle in the driveway, I can hear it whistling inside the house!! It wasn't making this noise before I rebuilt the carb and changed the gasket. My timing is still bouncing around as well. What is this??

Sounds like a nice vacuum leak is causing misfiring and rough running. Are you sure you built the carburetor all the way correctly? Installed all the gaskets right-way around, did the manifold gasket torque procedure correctly? Your timing is probably bouncing around *because* of the inconsistent idle speed and engine vacuum.
