looking through the posts for 170 head shaving, the 170 is a "0 deck" block , how much shaving can be done to boost compression without changing pushrods, .060? Motor is a stock 170 ,auto going to super six next week ,2 1/4 exhaust, figured that while the manifolds were off , to have the shop pull head machine it to ???? .060, .100 ? Help!?!

According to this document... http://slantsix.org/articles/racing-manual/index.html ...taking .090 off a 170 head will bump you from 8:1 to 10:1. You may not want that much. Don't forget that a Felpro head gasket raises the head about .020" over the steel shim gasket. Unless the head needs work I'd probably leave it alone. You should be able to take .060" off the head and have the stock pushrods work, but that's just my educated guess.

I have done three different 170 slant six blocks, with the same head. One block was decked to .000, Shim gasket and the head milled .100. The combo required shorter pushrods.
Another block at a deck of .005, felpro gasket, and the head milled .100 would have probably worked with stock pushrods, but was close, so I went with the short ones.
3rd engine, no decking, shim gasket, and .100 head mill, stock pushrods, work fine.
So it all depends on the combo. My guess is, stock block, thick (felpro, etc) gasket, and .080 off the head, stock pushrods should be OK. Also a Bigger cam, will normally have a smaller base circle, and will allow more milling etc, without haveing to use shorter push rods. As always, measure, and check.

Would there be any difference in taking material from the head or block? Both are at my machine shop and I'm doing a similar build to Link parts (I think) anyways, I was planning on taking at least .080 off the block, depending on my initial measurement. Should I just take it from the head instead? Sorry for the Hi-jack.

What motor are you doing, a 170, 198, 225? A 170 will normally allow about a max of .020-.025. off the deck. It is a "zero" deck motor from the factory, but I have never heard of one coming in at .000, from Mopar.
