Good catch, I meant 2500 rpm!

Just had extensive eye surgery for detached retina. My typing isn't spot on....

No wonder you have pinging with 20 degrees initial timing. If you cut that back to 10, your preignition should all be gone. Sorry about your eyes man. We are getting to be a sorry bunch are we not? Get well soon.

One more question...Does anyone have to sell/ know where I can I buy a dipstick for my slant? The crank I guess ate it and I've been using a dipstick way too long to check the oil. I did the oil change thing and marked it after that and check it every week or so. Any input on where I should start besides the local junkyard would be greatly appreciated. (also what category should this actually be under? thanks!)

I can't tell you where to find a stock dipstick, other than the salvage yard, but I have seen universal replacements in parts stores. The cap is attached with a set screw and you just fasten it down at the right place. If you do go to a salvage yard for a dipstick be sure the get the tube as well. I understand that they varied with the year and model of the vehicle in which they were installed.

Sam,

I am at 20 degrees initial advance and it will not ping on 89! Kind of unusual. There is a super stiff looped end spring on the 15R govenor.
It wil only advance 10 degrees at 2500 rpm.

That is my point, lots of initial advance and no ping! Cam set at 6 degrees advance.

I am trying to find a softer looped end MOPAR Distributor spring so I can get more than 10 degrees mechanical advance out of it at 2500 rpm. Running 30 degrees total the hard way............plus 13 more on top with the vacuum advance for 43 overall.

Dr. Dodge, Dan or anyone with distributor tuning experience,

Can these heavy springs be re-shaped? made longer with out breaking the spring? I would like to make the looped end longer. Please let me know. I bought a couple of old 383/400 distributors to rob the springs. They look like the same springs as in the SL6 distributor.

They say the eye might start working in a few weeks, pretty blurry. Then I can get back to tuning.

Thanks!

Trouble with making them longer is that they are not stable then. They tend to bounce at lower RPM and your timig bounces around as well. Those springs from the V-8 distributor should work.

Good luck on the eye. Isnt' modern medicine amazing though. It keeps us all going jsut a little bit longer. My brother just went through that. They won;t let him lift anything for awhile either.

Sam,

Yeah, the techniques are amazing, they said no lifting for 6 weeks for me too!

On the recurve, should I be using the light stock springs on each weight? Leaving the stock light one on one weight and adding the light spring from a V8 distributor to replace the heavy looped spring?

The looped spring on the distributor is very stocky and won't let the distributor budge past 10 degrees of mechanical at 2500. That is why I was asking if the loop could be made larger/reshaped with out breaking the wire.

Most of my driving is between 1500 and 2500 (35 to 60). If I take it on up to 4000 it just lays you in the back of the seat and I generally run out of smooth road since I am over 100 mph with the tall gears.
