 Post subject: Some Turbo Questions
PostPosted: Thu Jul 11, 2002 7:26 pm
I have a 72 Duster with a 225 slant six and I want to put a turbo on it.
It has;
-about 40k miles
-Dual Webber DCNVH36 Carbs on an Offy intake
-Dual outlet headers with dual 2" flowmaster exhaust.
-.030 shaved off the head with a composite gasket.
-stock points with accel super stock coil.

-Here come the questions;
1-is the turbo off a 87 off so t-bird a good choice?
2-can i keep the dual 2" exhaust if i run a y-pipe to the turbo?
3-what kind of ignition/electronics do i need to get?
4-how does the vacum advance work with the turbo?
5-are headers a PITA for the street? Too thin or what?
6-what kind of power gain sould i get with the turbo? an intercooler?

Thats enough for now, Im sure ill come up with some more later. I cant wait to hurt the rice burners and 5.0 boys :)

Thanks for all the help.

I installed the MSD ignition with the boost retard control using about 1 1/2 deg. of retard for every pound of boost for most driving with excellent results. (especially at lower rpm.)

: turbo?
Stock points right now, and I removed the vacume advance.
(Small IHI turbo, dual #1920 Holleys.)

Mine runs great, especally 40 to 95 mph. I didn't start with an intercooler, but I have decided to fabricate one. You know how hot those slants can get when you run them hard, especially with a turbo. I also put in a trans and oil cooler. It's also a good idea to get a turbo insulating wrap kit. Wrap from the manifold to just past the fire wall to keep the heat in to help the turbo, and out of the engine compartment.

Good luck with those "5.slow" boys!

The ones with manual transmissions are good choices. If the T-bird has an auto, it will have a smaller, less desirable turbo - apparently to avoid breaking a tranny meant for the NA version of the motor.

One guy (Andrew?) on SlantSix.com is selling a thick wall turbo header, which would probably be a better choice than what you have now. Ordinary mild steel headers are not a good match with turbos anyway. The headers run a lot hotter with a turbo on them.
:
: 3-what kind of ignition/electronics do i need

While my turbo buildup isn't completed yet, I have put a Pertronix Ignitor and MSD BTM on it. I may later add an MSD 6 box too, but the BTM is a very useful device.
:
: 4-how does the vacum advance work with the
: turbo?

I'd leave it hooked up the same way, assuming you're talking blow-through. It won't do anything under boost unless you can somehow find one that backs off the timing under boost (in which case you don't need a BTM) and it'll work the same way as stock when you're not under boost.
:
: 5-are headers a PITA for the street? Too thin
: or what?

See my comments above. Unless you're running headers made from something like 16 gauge stainless steel (or Inconel, although I have no idea where you'd get headers made out of that!), they're likely to start sagging and cracking from heat.

Enough power to definitely hurt the rice boys and pick off the slower 5.0's. With a healthy, internally stock engine I'd expect 200-250 to be possible, depending on the intercooling and a few other factors. Add some porting and a mild cam that matches the turbo well, and it's possible to get a perfectly streetable 300 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque, on pump gas. Even more if you want one that revs beyond 6,000 RPM. These are Desktop Dyno numbers, not real dyno numbers.

-I will be looking for a turbo off an 87 or so T-Bird five speed.
1-Whats a fair price to pay for the turbo at the junkyard?

2-What is a good car to get the intercooler off of? Price?

3-What kind of mods need to be done to my carburators with a turbo? I dont know much about carbs.
4-What is the safe level off boost on a slant? about 10 Lbs?

Thanks for all the help,
Tom B.

At my local "Self-Serv" yards I can get out the door with a Turbo for about $60.00
:
: 2-What is a good car to get the intercooler off

I hear Saabs have them, Also Volvos but I have never pulled or used an intercooler so I don't know the cost.

You will know a lot about carbs after you do a turbo project! What type of system will you use, a "blow through" (blow air into the carb) or a "draw through"? (draw the fuel mixture out of the carb and into the turbo)
:
: 4-What is the safe level off boost on a slant?

A slant in good condition can take 10 lbs of boost if you can take some spark advance out as the boost increases. The trick will be to get the turbo to make 10 lbs, especially through an intercooler.

No Problem : - )

I am going with a blow through set up and i have the dual webber intake/carbs from proline fuel.
1-What needs to be done to the carbs they are model # DCNVH36.
2-Can i make a pipe to cnnect the turbo to the stock manifold or will it lose too much heat/power.
I guess i'll just have to look around for the intercooler.
Thanks, Tom B.

Awhile back some one posted pictures of a Offy with Dual One Barrel Carbs.and the custom made ceramic Carb. Cover he made, you can get a idea from that post if some one lets you know where,etc............arthur

That would be me. I used 2' steel pipe to connect the turbo to the manifold rather than trying to cut and weld the manifold to the turbo. I welded the seams and die grinded the inside as I went. The heavy guage pipe really holds in the heat, although the twists and turns are definately a compromise. Still it really seams to be working well so far. As for the carb adapters, I recomend you go with something thats allready available unless you have experience with fiberglass, ceramic molding, ect. The MSD, BTM ignition controler is the way to go for retarding the timing.
