Long question short, is there anything I can do to prolong its usefulness? I'm planning on installing an electronic unit, but I've got other priorities before spending money on that just yet. At this point it only happens in the mornings when it's cold, and only starts making noise and making the needle jump at/above certain speeds. As I drive, the speed that it'll reach before making noise will go higher and higher until it's just fine for the rest of the day. Examle: when I first start out in the mornings, it'll make noise at and above 10MPH, but each time I stop at a light and get moving again, it'll reach a higher speed indication before it starts making noise and jumping.

Suggestions?

I'd try lubing the cable first.....

64 Valiant 225 / 904 / 42:1 manual steering / 9" drum brakes

Brand new cable. BUT, I do plan to add some graphite to the lube on it (I used Dan's lithium and graphite mixture when I installed it).

To add on to that one, here's another question. The two screws that secure the speedo itself to the instrument cluster; are the little rubber grommets on the washers needed? They were pretty much just powder when I took my unit apart last, so I used regular washers on the screws so that they'd still be spaced out correctly (in case it was an issue). Could that possibly be causing any problems?

I would suggest having the speedo head rebuilt, but then I like stock gauges.

I would if I wasn't planning on replacing my gauges. I've already got a panel from Sick6 that I'll be using for a whole series of Autometer Phantom gauges. I'll be keeping idiot lights too.....just in case

'course, if a NOS speedo was easily accessible, I'd jump for one of those to get me by, too...

My wife's Duster had this terrible squealing from the speedo at the beginning of a 13 hour trip. Lubed the cable, but not change. Pulled the cable off the speedo, lubed the back of the speedo with a blast of WD-40 (not the best option, but it was handy) and the noise was banished.

Well, the Kroil worked great. I relubed the speedo cable and then sprayed just a bit of Kroil into the back of my speedo (where the cable connects), let it sit up for a few minutes for the Kroil to penetrate, then put it all back together and this morning during my (freakin cold) drive to work, the speedo didn't make a sound and the needle was perfectly smooth and stable. Almost as smooth as an electronic speedo.

I just bought myself plenty more time before having to take the plunge on the new gauges.

How in the H are you gaining access to this. ARe you lying on your back with your feet up over the seat backs? I have always hated this phase of car work. Good work on getting the noise fixed.
