My 1972 Dodge Swinger has a 225 engine.
After I drive it for a while and shut it off, it refuses to start again until it cools down.
I can smell and see gas fumes in the carb. Ththe batterys brand new and the odometer reads only 26k miles.
It run fine after it starts.
Any suggestions?

Welcome to the board. If you haven't done so already, you'll want to buy the three books described in this post right away.

For starters, do the fuel line mod, check to make sure your manifold heat control valve is not stuck, put a quality rebuild kit and a new float in your carburetor, and make sure you're running the correct (and working) 180° coolant thermostat and 3/8"-thick carburetor base gasket.

Quality kits and floats are getting hard to find. Call Walker Products on 323-232-3359, tell them where you're located, and ask them how you can most easily obtain a number 15519A kit and a number 100-86 or 100-14 float (one of these is no longer made, the other one still is). You'll also want to pick up their nice G850 base gasket.

Whatever you do, don't be tempted to get a "remanufactured" carburetor from a parts store. They're junk.

In the meantime, it will also help you get started if you will hold the accelerator about 1/3 of the way down (WITHOUT pumping it!) while you're cranking the engine when it's been sitting after warming up.

Kragen, it was a carter rebuilt by holley, 1 st on was junk, lots of slop in the throttle shaft, no busing. The second one was better but the float level or something with the metering rods was/is bad. I had a 3rd (rebuilt by Tomko) that had a good bushing and throttle shaft but had an off idle stumble.
