Hi

I'm new to car fixology and would appreciate your help. I picked up all the stuff I need to do a tune-up (including a book which told me what to do). It also told me to either check a spec sheet at the place I buy my parts or call a garage.

I tried both of those, and nobody seemed to be able to give me info (or just didn't want to). Where else can I find info on my car? I can't find the owner's manual. It's a 1966 Coronet with a 225.

I've got the correct plug gap of .30, but don't know the correct dwell, point gap, timing and - hmm, I'm pretty sure there was something else I need but don't remember. Is there somewhere online that has this info or might someone out there happen to have that info?

I sure appreciate any help. As a side note, this past weekend I managed to pull, evaluate, clean and re-gap my own sparkplugs. I'm quite impressed with me. Up to this point, the only thing I've ever done is put gas in one hole and a key in another (and I'm sure I've even come close to mixing those up from time to time).

Cheers

OK, here you go:

Sparkplugs gap at .035 (.30 is a typo I hope ; - )

Distributor Contact Points, gap at .020 which should give a dwell of 40-42º

Initial timing advance should be 6 to 8º BTDC but back-off if you hear "pings".

Valve Adjustment, Intake Lash at .010 and Exhaust at .020
(do a search for Valve Adjustment (all) and read-up on the process)

Eep...nope not a typo. Guy at the parts counter told me the plug gap was .30 and even looked up in his computer what plugs I needed (which were pre-gapped to .30). S'okay. Pulling them all out again and re-gapping will be good for me.

Other than that, you lost me after the dwell, but that's s'okay too. It gives me more stuff to look up and learn about in my new car books!

Thanks so much for the info!

My guess is that you really gapped them at .030, machanic's "slang" would be: "Gap them at 30", meaning 30 thousands of one inch, written as .030
The "book" calls-out .035 gap which is what I would expect the pre-gap to be. .030 will be fine, a little tight but it will wear-in. .30 is just over a 1/4 inch, (.250) I don't think the plug would take that large of a gap.

Keep asking questions, as they say, the only dumb question is the one that was never asked.

I stand corrected indeed. .030 is the gap I used.
