Hi-
I have a '65 Dart with a 225. It burns oil almost as fast as I can pour it in. Want to transplant a newer donor engine into the car, but heard that not all slant 6 are the same, that the mid-60's had a different bolt pattern where it attaches to the tranny than later years. So what year engines will fit a '65? I know where I could get a '67 Coronet engine, but not am willing to commit until I know it will fit. Thanks!
Any advice would be appreciated.

First....more info is needed. What trans do you have....an auto or manual? If auto trans, you're first problem is that you must get a replacement from a not newer than '65 car. The push-button auto trans was exclusive because of the shifter mechanism design. There was a change-over design in '66, but even that isn't a direct swap. As far as the engine/trans bolt pattern is concerned, they are the same.

The PB trans is not exclusive in how it bolts to the engine. Any Slant Six will bolt to the early trans. The only thing to worry about is the crank hub. '67 and earlier engines used the small hub torque converter and crank, so you should be OK with your swap unless someone has switched this over after that '67 was built.

Cheers,

Lou

DOH! Don't mind me much,I'm only 1/2 a bubble off level. For some reason, I was thinking he was trying to replace a trans, not an engine, hence my senseless reply.

Ha ha, dont worry Roger, we all have occasional plug fouling- and I guess I could have worded my question better. So you say a 67 engine will be no problem to put into my 65 (with automatic floor-shifting tranny, NOT the pushbutton tranny)? I'm just trying to get an idea of how late an engine will fit into a 65- some guy at a junkyard once told me any engine later than 67 wouldnt work due to a different bolt pattern, but I have no idea if that is true or not. Thanks for responding!

A '67 engine WILL fit a '65 auto trans. It is the crank hub diameter that changed to a bigger one in 1968. Everything else (bolt-pattern-wise) is the same as your '65 engine. See the engine parts (crank, head, block...) compatibility list in the Articles section of this site.

The guy didn't know what he was talking about. As Lou said, the engine wil bolt up to the trans, but you might experience some clearance problems at the back of the crank, against the torque convertor. You may want to check it out before you get the engine up on the porta-crane.

Any year slant six engine will bolt up to any year slant six trans. 1967 and older trans and/or engine direct fit, no mods required. 68 and newer trans and/engine, direct fit no mods required. 68 and newer engine to 67 and earlier trans, requires: 68 and newer flex plate, and adapter ring on the crank pilot of the 67 and earlier converter. 68 and newer trans to 67 and earlier engine, requires a special converter, with a small diameter crank pilot, and a large (68 up) input splines. In your case, if you are sure of the year of the trans and the engine, just bolt it up.
