Hey you guys,

Lately I have been seeing black spots on the ground after I start my car and the inside of my tailpipe is all sooty and black. I'm getting tired of cleaning my driveway every other day. Does anyone no what this is? I think running way too rich. If so, what is the best way to tune the holley 1920? I have a tach, vacuum gauge, and most likely what ever else is needed to tune a car with the exception of an exhaust gas analyzer ( $$$).

Mine does that as well. I park on blacktop, so it's not as much of a worry for me. I figured it was just in the morning when the choke is on and the engine is running rich. I've never had that problem later in the day.

This suggests the choke thermostat and/or choke pull-off need to be adjusted. What year and model is the car?

Its a 72 swinger with the 225 and 1920 carb.

I have the same set up. I just put more bend in the choke rod to make it shorter so it doesn't stay on so long. When you get that much black soot it is over choked. I bent the rod so it is like a "S" or "Z" almost 90 degree bends. After a few times adjusting it, I got just right. It has been running fine for about a year now, no more black soot. It is a simple fix.

Bending rods not meant to be bent — such as the choke thermostat pushrod — is a brute-force/hamfist approach. The choke thermostat is adjustable via the locknut on the side - you have to remove the thermostat from the manifold in order to adjust it. The choke pull-off is adjusted by altering the width of the legs of the "U" bend in the pull-off link. But before we adjust anything, have you got the correct thick carb base gasket installed?

About 5/16" thick.

Unless yours is a super low-miles unit, you may find it difficult to get a good adjustment on your choke. I don't spend much time messing with these any more...I just toss the old type unit and put on one of the Electric choke kits.
