So I've been through the threads on maltese engines and I think I've got that down.Mines in an 83 van,the motor was purchased as a rebuilt longblock in 84 and stored in a warm dry place till I put it in last fall.Pulled the head to install a comp cam/lifters/springs etc and found it was bored 60,kool.What I found while this was going on was it had the maltese stamp and lo and behold there are no serial #'s stamped on the boss. Not ground off, just clean never been stamped.Local dodge mech says maybe a factory warranty motor which was intended to have serial # transfered from warrantied motor and didn't get done? Any ideas? Just one of the things that keeps me awake at night :? Thanks

The cross was stamped to indicate .010 undersize bearings for the crank.
This should be addressed in the FSM if you have one from late 60's or 70's

According to my FSM, the Maltese Cross followed by additional digits idiactes a .001 undersize journal on the specified journal. M1, M2, etc. indicates an undersize main journal on the number indicated by the digit folowing the "M." R1, R2, etc, indicates an undersize journal on numbered rod journal indicated by the number following the "R."

Thanks,I've pert much got the cross figured out.Another member gave me a link that says the cross alone plus letter/number indicates the 001 undersize and where, the cross followed by x indicates 010 across the crank.I'm still trying to figure out why no engine serial nr's.Did mopar use the boggered "cross' engines for warrenty replacements?Years ago I worked on a different brand rig that came from the factory with 020 over pistons and nothing to indicate it until we opened it up.Just trying to figure what mopar did 25 years ago. :?

A lot of the maltese marked motors were used for warranty purposes. Some were just sold as dealer replacement motors for vehicles out of warranty. They did not necesarily get the SN stamped. :D
