my 225 is running badly.i tried to blame it on the petronix kit i installed, but after reverting to points, my trbl persists.
the best way i can describe it is to say when it runs, it feels lumpy. there are severe vibrations thru-out the rev range. there is a sweet spot about 1/3-1/2 the way up in revs. i don't have a tach so i don't know the specific rev #'s.
it feels like the pulse from each cylinder is abbreviated. reading recent posts about the "short rotor" has me wondering what sort of effect tthat part will cause?

any ideas?

Do you have a randon or a consistant miss?
Have you checked the firing order and valve adjustment?

Check the voltage at the coil. Then have the coil checked. If it is old and leaking oil it may be failing.

The short rotor won't cause that much spark scatter. How does your cap look? How do your plugs look?
Are they a light powdery cinnamon? or dark? If they are dark, you may not be getting a enough spark to fire the mixture.

When was the last time you ran some gas drier? Could be water in the carb. It is that time of the year to put some in.

How old is the motor? What year is your motor? and what carb? are they any vacuum leaks? Could you be over timed?

the miss is consistent, at different intensities.
this engine has been in place for 17 years. its lived a good life.
haven't checked the coil.
the plugs have a dark cinamon color, not very dark, but not quite the normal color.
i've never heard of gas drier.
it's a 225 from 1968. last rebuilt in 1990. holley 1 bbl.
haven't check for vacuum leaks, yet.
i'm planning to check the timing chain, valve lash, and vacuum this Sunday

Dryer, to get the condensation, water out. Usually methanol in a yellow plastic bottle called Heat, or STP makes it too.

Sounds like the coil output maybe low. What spark plugs are you using? Heat range? I use NGK UR4's for the 78 peanut plug head and they burn a very light powdery cinnamon color.

What kind of mileage are you getting? Is it gradually getting worse?

i found my engine isn't as "lumpy" as it was after i realized the rear U-joint was loose, and replaced both joints.

DOH ! ! ! ! !!

i'm watching a timing chain on Ebay. the brand is Cloyes, includes the chain and the larger gear. it comes from a seller in texas. is this a wise purchase? my timing chain is 17 years old. it's gotto be at least part of my problems.

for the most part they were all fine. #3 exhaust was the exception. compression test revealed only 30lbs in #3.

it runs much better now.

thx for the help!
