STP does have some of the high pressure additives that are helpful but it also has viscosity modifiers which are not. It also has been implicated in the formation of varnish.

I just got the "new" Mopar magazine, Mopar Enthusiast in the mail yesterday, Vol 2 Issue 1. There is an article about ZDDP being removed from motor oil, though I haven't had a chance to read through it. There is a sidebar that mentions that Mopar/ Mopar Performance/ Direct Connection is looking into making a ZDDP additive avalible, no time line on avaliblity yet though. Seems like a good idea though, I don't like to have to go to a GM dealer for the stuff.

I just changed the oil today in the van. 5 1/2 qts of 15-40 Valvoline Super Blue diesel oil, 1 qt. of STP oil stabilizer. Not the STP treatment, the stabilizer isn't made anymore. I have 10 more qts in the shop.

STP treatmnet is loaded with ZDDP.


AFA Lucas a friend has a Mack that he has had since 2004. Uses Rotella and lucas oil treatmant. It had over 500K on it when he bought it. Probably 800K or more on it now. Never had the heads off. 427HP with an 18speed.

Oh yeah.Seems to be two types of folks in this world,thems that believe in oil additives and thems that don't(not talkin bout ZDDP we know thats good).Lucas now,well let me see.If you're for it you got a crankin thing at the parts store.If your against it you got a electic powered crankin thing.Me I used it some in my 95 Kenworth,not all the time just now and then.Did it help?,couldn't tell you.Did it hurt?,couldn't tell you.DD60 Detroit 450hp,13spd,980 thou on the clock when I got rid of her and quit the longhaul biz.Then again,the detroit and for that matter any diesel in a big rig should last a million miles if it's serviced properly so until I see a big ole motor runnin down the road with windows in the oil pump and such so we can watch it truley working at speed and temp,I'm on the fence

They always seemed that way to me, too. I was always wondering what, precisely, they were trying to demonstrate other than the climb-the-gears action, which makes next to zero sense in a pressure lubricated oil system.

I never could see the sense of this kind of thinking. If something is better/helps, What difference does it make who makes it or where it is purchased? I have GM and Ford parts on my Mopars.

PS: you don't need to go to a GM dealer for the EOS. Just go to a part store that sells Delco products.

I am wondering if $7 + oil+ filter is a necessary thing with a mild cam or a stock cam?

Maybe with .500 or more?

The place I work have Macks and IHs. Some of the Macks circa '94-'96 are currently being rotated out of service when they hit 1.2 million miles, most still run great and retain 90% of the power they had when new. PMI service is done every 35 thousand miles, oil is std Cheveron 10-30, not diesel oil, no Lucas , STP or other additives are used.

EOS is only needed when you are breaking in a new cam and flat tappet lifters. After that it is a waste of time.
