i just measured the mating surfaces of my super six manifold and my Clifford shorties. the 2bbl, cast iron intake measures in @ .550". the Cliffords measure in @ .490". is this a recipe for leaks? is this close enuff to be no problem?
if its gonna be good for leaks, is there a fix for such a close miss match?

The exhaust ports on the head are a bit smaller than the intake ports. Is that what you are worried about?

no. i guess i worded my question badly?
my concern is the depth of the flange that mates to the cylinder head.

my 2bbl stock intake as compared to the Clifford headers i just got.
there is a difference of .060" from one to another.

is this a normal difference? is it something i should be concerned with? is this why i hear all the talk about Aussie gaskets?

That should be close enough. If you want you can use a nut welded on the flange then put on you washers.

Factory manifold mounting tab thickness has always been .550
Clifford has always used .500 thick material for their header flanges.

Note: the headers are welded to the flange at the gasket surface's mounting face. The weld 'bead' is then ground flat. This usually leaves .030 to .060 of additional protruding weld material, adding to the over-all flange thickness.

Bottomline, a small difference in thickness between the intake and the header flange is not a problem.
Most leaks in this area are caused by badly warped or twisted header flanges. Check this with a long straight edge.

i can run with that. looks like they did a good job cleaning up the weld beads. all looks smooth, both sides.
