Dan, I know what you mean. I Work on cars for customers, everyday, and have this problem. It is one thing for the aftermarket to get lower quality parts from suppliers, when there is a reduced demand for the parts. The big gripe I have is the same poor quality parts geting into the parts system for fairly late model vehicles. I put a post up, a short time ago, about buying a new master cyl, from a major mfg (bendix, raybestos, etc, don't remember which), that was made in China. Just purchased a new water pump for a 4.9 Caddy, (major brand) made in China. I run into this constantly, and you think you are frustated?

And not even the biggest mountain of Six Sigma statistical quality control BS paperwork swearing, affirming and confirming zero-tolerance strict adherence to ISO 9000, ISO 9001, ISO 9002, ISO 14001, ISO 14002 and ISO 8675309 changes the fact that the parts themselves are garbage.

This is what we get for allowing MBAs rather than engineers to run our industries.

At one time I worked for a 9001 company. I kept sending in documentation, on defects. After, over one year, I was still sending the same reports, on the same defects. Nothing was ever done to correct the problem. The worst thing about the situation, was when I contacted the President of the company. He refered me to head engineer, and the VP of QC. At this meeting, I was told "it was not cost effective to correct the problem. That the field techs could fix it under warrentee (this is cheeper?)". I told them both, "they were a couple of f***en, a$$holes" to their face. They didn't even have enough interest to disipline me.

Yup. All the ISO programs do is make sure your process is documented. If your process is to have a gorilla sit on a bar stool at the end of the production line, eating bananas and picking his nose and utterly disregarding what's moving past him on the line, that's fine as long as you've specified that procedure in your manual, and as long as the procedure in the manual is what's done. It's totally circular, and it's an utter scam designed to do nothing but create an ISO certification industry. And it never stops. Once you've paid all the fees and documented all your banana-eating, nose-picking, product-disregarding gorillas, you're not done...or at least, not for long. Because these ISO "standards" are periodically updated, and the MBAs who came up with this mess in the first place have done such an effective job of false and misleading advertising that everyone "knows" ISO xxxx and xxxxx adherence means high quality, which means it gets written into specifications ("Vendor must adhere to latest versions of ISO nnnn, nnnn, nnnn, nnnnnn, nnnnn, and nnnnnn and provide proof of adherence"). And even where it's not written into specs, it's been so effectively misrepresented that meetings go like this:

Specifier: "Well, boss, we could buy our widgets from Bizcorp, but they're only ISO 9001-2005. I recommend we get our widgets from Companyco, because they're ISO 9001-2007!".

Boss: "Well, obviously Bizcorp is behind the times. Go with Companyco."

I've met that gorilla!

I once had a meeting with a Quality Assurance manager trying to resolve a problem. I tried to tell him the process was no good, and that we were building defective parts that failed in the field after passing all tests and inspections.

He asked me what made a high quality part. I told him it was a part designed to do a specific job, for a specified time, under specified conditions, and built so that expectation would be the result.

He told me I was wrong, and that it was a part built and inspected to the process, and that since I was not an engineer, I had no business questioning that process unless I found defective parts on the line. I was eventually able to convince an engineer of the need for a process change, but meanwhile "the nose-picking gorilla" let us crank out defective hardware. Maybe he's now advising the Chinese.

That about says it all.

Update,Bizcorp has inproved process.Gorilla must now pick nose and eat that.Banana breaks are to be taken in meeting room where we will discuss having a "Year of the gorilla"on new ISO compliant chinese calendar
