I now have a new looking Holley 2bbl, 350 cfm carb(OEM style) on top of an Offy intake. My 225 powered Volare is running very smoothly, but when I punch it, it feels like its bogging, or running very lean, then it accelerates. If I ease on the gas pedal, it does fine. So, should I play around with the jet sizes, the pump "shooter", or what? Where should I start? I'm inexperienced at carbs, but Reed Speir (Thanks Reed!) emailed me a manual for this carb.

Thanks in advance you guys!

Wes

Wes,

I have info at home on a shooter size that was suggested by MP for the 390 4bbl. I think it may be a good starting point for your carb. I'll post the PN when I get home this evening. Several of things you can do b4 swapping the shooter.

There is a screw w/ a spring that pushes the lever on the accelerator pump. That's one adjustment you can make to control "when" you get "the shot".

Holley offers an accessory pack of cams for the accelerator pump. Easy to swap out, these will alter the profile of the accelerator pump. I usually just try different cams until it "feels" right.

Last resort, the accelerator pump can be swapped out. I think you have a 35cc pump. There is a 50cc "Reno" pump available. Really don't think you'll need to go that far.

Hope this helps.

Later,

Gilly

I would first check the "pump shot" as Tom suggest but then move to the power circuit / power valve if needed. It could be that the power enrichnment comes in late or it has a low number power valve in it (6.5) and needs a higher rating.

Get a hold of a vacuum gauge and hook it to manifold vacuum and route the gauge into the car where you can see it while you drive. You will quickly see the place where it "goes lean" in terms of vacuum signal.

Example: if it seems to "sag" at 9 inches "mercury", then pick-up at 6 ", then change your 6.5 power valve to a 9.5 and that should fix it.
If there is still a sag after that change, try a 10.5" P.V. or you may have to enlarge the power valve restrictor channel holes (jets) so more fuel can pass through once the power valve opens. (I have had to do this on Slants but this is a tricky adjustment, these are drilled holes in the carb.'s body so easy does it, a little at a time)
If it's a Holley 2300 series carb., the power valves are the same as the Holley 4 bbl carbs.

Wes and Doc and Gilly,

I think Wes has an OEM Holley carb from a '70s 360 V8, and not the aftermarket Holley 350 2bbl. I have heard people describe those 360 carbs that way and cause confusion. Correct me if I'm wrong here, Wes.

I have run that carb before, and I pulled it because the pump plunger crapped out on it causing just the condition you describe. It does not have a power valve or external accel pump like the Holley 350 aftermarket does. It does take standard Holley jets.

I would recommend rebuilding it with a new accel pump plunger and maybe trying some different Holley jets (try larger first). I think it'll have 64s in it, so you might try 66s first.

Happy tuning,

Lou

You're right Lou! I have a big air cleaner that fits this carb, and it has a 360 decal on it. MichiganDon sent me an air cleaner that's smaller, but it was from a '77 Dodge Maxi van with a 360 2bbl.
So you recommend a new accel pump plunger, and maybe new jets? I have no idea what size jets are in it now. I have some time off next week to look at it though.
Thanks a lot for ya'll's input!!!!!
