 Post subject: A brake question
PostPosted: Sat Aug 31, 2002 5:42 pm
I'm working on the brakes on my '69 Valiant. I discovered that the passenger side rear brake was contaminated with axle grease due to a bad gasket. The other rear brake was doing all of the work! When I replaced the shoes today, I had a problem with the pin that holds the self adjuster. It seems that they drilled out the shoe too much and the pin won't stay in. The local auto parts store didn't have another set of shoes, so I decided to assemble the brake with the new shoes and without the self adjuster. How important is the self adjuster? I don't think that the older cars even had them!

Joel,

You don't need it. I don't have them on the back of my '68 either and you just have to adjust up the brakes every 10-20k or so - not a big deal.

Those stupid "self adjusters" never really work anyway!
