It looks like all the bugs are about worked out with the 5 spd conversion and now it's time to think about the "perfect" rear end gears(8 3/4). These are what I am looking at

4.10 13.73 first w/ 2.78 final
4.30 14.40 first w/ 2.92 final
4.56 15.27 first w/ 3.10 final

My goal for the car leans more to a road rally than a drag car. Although I do want to be able to launch when sitting next to v8 cars. with that said is there a practical limit to first gear? do any of these look like to much first gear? I will be using a street tire in the 235/60 range and the motor is getting built quite a lot also.

Thanks
Steve

Hey Steve,

I suspect anything above 14:1 will be useless (read: super granny gear). Even that 13.73 seems a might low to me. Personally, I would ultimately like to run a 4.10 or 4.30 gear in my car with the Motorsports/V8 2.95 1st and 0.63 5th. This is 12-12.5:1 1st and 2.6-2.7:1 final. Actually, I'd really like to convert my trans to a lower 5th for closer ratios (2.95 - 1st, and 0.68 - 5th).

If I get time, I'll throw some 4.57s in my car, which gives 13.5:1 1st and 2.88 5th. Then I'd have a real feel for it.

With your trans, I would probably try 3.91s. Dartvader will have something to say about this also, since he has a very low 1st on his T5.

Cheers,

Lou

Thanks Lou

After I posted I spent a little more time at the calculator and came to that same 2.95 combo you mentioned. I think I will leave things alone for now and plan on swapping gears around later. I'd hate to go through all this and not be able to use first gear at all. Have you found a source for a rebuild manual for these tranny's?

Thanks
Steve

I have to admit I took the easy way out to begin with. I just bought a brand new (not rebuilt) Ford Racing T5 ($1170 with shipping from Summit), just so I wouldn't have to mess around. I don't have it in the car, as I still have my toasted-synchro '85 V8 trans in there. The factory Mustang V8 T5s had 3.35 1st, BTW. I will likely rebuild that one, but I haven't looked for a manual yet. I think Summit may have a video?

Got my Griffin universal radiator and '74 Dart hanging gas pedal in the car yesterday, so I'm pretty stoked about that.

Cheers,

Lou
