My friend Lucas who wrote a Jimmy Buffet song has a '80 8330D van with a 1 bbl. He hauls lots of tools around middle TN.

It has some burned valves. We were going to rebuild a '78 head off his '78 slant shorty Tradesman Super Six 833OD van.

Both vans are factory sunroof! "Phineas" is the '78. "Ruby" is the red '80 window van.

Going to refresh the BBD.

Should we take anything off this head? I was thinking of doing a gasket match. It usually likes midgrade (when it was healthy)

Yes, I would mill the head to where you have about 9 to 9.5 to one compression. I did that and it helped torque allot on my car. Your friend needs it to move those heavy tools around.

Bowl port the head and gasket match the intake ports, but not the exhaust ports. Gasket match the exhaust manifold, but don't match the ports on the intake manifold. It sounds odd but it works with a one barrel to increase torque and mileage.

Then install 2.25" exhaust pipe and muffler.

Hey RUG since im Pertneer Memphis.
My vote is to take some (maybe90) off the head. Ithink Aggressive Ted is 90 or 100 and he has a 1 bbl instead of a 2bbl. If he has the cash I would go ahead and put a better cam in it from Erson. Maybe the RV torque cam.
My 02.
Frank

He has a the 78 engine sitting waiting for a rebuild. I would tell him do a came etc. Right now he needs some of the power back.

Back in 2005 I did a tune up and he had the valves way too tight.

What do you think about the mild MP cam? I have one of those new in the box. I think it is too mild for what I am doing with mine.

I see not opening up the intake creates an anti reversion effect.

His money is tight right now.

Use the MP 244 cam you have and spend 1 hour with a die grinder on the ports bowls, just grind the sharp edge "transition" out from under the seat and "bell-mouth the port openings a little. (mostly to deburr everything)
Just a "quickee" helps a lot on a street engine.

On milling the head... I would see how much the shop will take off for their standard cost. With my shop, he will cut .040 - .050 before he starts charging more. If you can get a piston deck height measurment, we can make more then guesses on how much would be OK.

would the deck height matter right now? We are going to eventually rebuild the 78 motor. It might need an over bore and new pistons. He was going to scrap the motor. it has some rust on the cylinders now.

Thanks! I will see what the machinest will do for $XXX. I just talked to him on the phone last night for the first time. He has a machine shop at home. He is a Mopar only guy. 8)

Not much of a slant authority. Closest to me is Dennis?
