Just one quick question are slant sixes known to eat dipsticks? The tip of my dipstick was snapped off. Is there any little trick to getting the tip out of the oil pan other than removing the pan or is that the only way?

Yeah, I've seen a few dipstick tips in sl/6 oil pans over the years. I don't think it has as much to do with the engine as it does with installing the dipstick tube with the wrong spatial orientation.
I have a telescoping pencil sized magnet that would fit thru the drain hole. It looks kinda like an extended antenna with a magnetic tip. Don't remember where I got it, but if you keep your eyes open, you should be able to find something similar.

Same thing happened to me! But it was before I bought the car. My dipstick is half as long as it should be and I'm always on the lookout for a new one. I'm also very regular about oil changes.

Get a magnetic oilpan plug - yours might already be. That should grab the end of the dip stick.
Later,

I see by the posts that this is a common problem. Anyone know where I can find a replacement dipstick for my 73 Swinger 225 slant six?? Would be nice to be able to check my oil.
