I was looking at getting my harmonic balancer reworked and went to Damper Doctor to see if they could do it. The picture of the one that matches mine says Driver side timing mark. Since the engine is apart I was wondering what it lines up with for timing. The engine is a 1972 225. The other 225 I have is 1980 and the timing mark is on the passenger side and lines up with a pointer mounted on the timing chain cover. Also the notch in the harmonic balancer is at the same location relative to the keyway as the 1980 SL6. :?:

The '61-'66 slant-6s have the timing mark and indicator tab on the manifold side of the engine. All other years have the timing mark/indicator on the distributor side, which is a lot easier to deal with. Brand-new dampers are available for not too much money...

The forged crankshaft balancer is noticeably thinner and has a scallop roughly opposite the keyway. I thought the SL6 was neutrally balanced. Why does it have this feature?

BTW. Where can I get a new harmonic balancer?

The scollop is weight removal from balancing that unit.
These cuts change in position and size, from unit to unit.

The factory balanced components individually so you can swap with-out any problems.

Wait a minute Dan! That e-bay ad says for 60-87. Didn't they have 2 different ones throught the years where they won't interchange?? I say yes cause I found this in the article section that says,

F. Vibration Damper

The 170, 198 and 225 all use the same vibration damper PN 2806211. The '76-77 cast crank engine uses a different damper PN 4071060. They should not be swapped.

I think this Motorhead on e-bay doesn't know what he's talking about and trying to pull a fasty!

There were multiple different dampers (offhand, I can think of '60, '61-'62, '63-'66, '67-'76, several different ones for '76-up, and I've probably left some variants off this list) but the only significant difference is the location of the timing mark, as it seems. I used to think dampers couldn't be interchanged across the cast/forged cranks, but it seems enough people have done so without any problem (not to mention using dampers from 413s and 440s on slant-6s!) that practically speaking, it's fine. Maybe Doctor Dodge or someone else can tell us why it can't/shouldn't be done, but this topic comes up every now and then, and nobody's ever posted a solid reason why it shouldn't or can't be done, nor has anybody ever posted "I tried it and broke my crankshaft" or anything of the sort.

What you found is one of many examples of the quality (ahem) of the information (ahem) in the Direct Connection/Mopar Performance Slant-6 "racing manual". Everything in that document should be taken with a large grain of salt.

I've talked to him at length, and to his supplier. He's neither ignorant nor malicious.

Just a quick Hi-jack. Can anyone confirm or deny if all the cast and forged slants are internally balanced? Having dealt with big blocks for years I know that these are completely different animals and have to keep the balancer to crank relation.

Confirmed.
All Slants are internally balanced and are "neutral balanced" meaning that if all the rotating parts weigh the same and the crank is dynamically balanced, you are done.
