I just bought an Erson RV cam with the special Slant Six Forum Discount a while back--finally getting around to installing it.

Do I really need to degree it? There aren't any ways to adjust it if it is off, unless I want to take it to a machine shop, drill holes, etc.

Anybody run into an Erson that was off?

THanks,

Joe

You may not be able to adjust it, but at least you'll know where it's at..............

I believe you can ajust it with the MrGasket offset bushings kit made for the Chevy's. You just drill the pin hole in the cam gear and use the bushing needed to move the cam where you want.

You degree it to not only make sure the cam is right, but also the timing set. I have found Mopar Performance sets marked as much as 2 teeth off.

You really need to degree it. The cam can be ground incorrectly and the timing set can be marked incorrectly. Either way, you're leaving some of your performance in the box if you don't degree it. There are several ways to move the cam timing. One is the offset bushings mentioned above. Another is with offset crank keys; and finally, Doc posted his method a while back. He elongates the pin hole in the cam gear and shims one side.

Joe, your title says it all. You're being lazy. If you are going through the trouble and cost of an aftermarket cam, you should spend the time and small amount of money (I think about $15 for bushings) to degree the cam. This will make sure you are getting the most the cam has to offer.

If you dgree the cam you get to chose what kind of performance you want. Slightly retarded gives stronger high RPM, slightly advanced gives more low end torque. OH Boy, now you have to make choice. Man! That sucks. Well, if you don;t chose, you can just take pot luck, and let the Universe decide for you. I will run either way.

I drilled out the hole and used off set bushings. It was easy. What was not, was figuring out how to mount a pointer,(it was not that hard, but more work than buying the thing in the first place), and understanding the numbers on the cam card and the degree wheel. For the pointer, I simply used a bent coat hanger with a loop at one end to put a bolt through into a head bolt hole. This is good mental exercize and will keep your brain young, as well as make your car the way you want to.

I think we have all bought parts and then felt intimidated by actually installing them, and then left them sit around for awhile. So don't feel different, or odd. And most of us probably have a performance part or two sitting on the shelf right now, awaiting installation courage, and or time, weather, etc.

Sam
