I need a carb for my slant six, basicly stock motor with clifford 4-bbl intake, dual outlet headers and electronic ignition. Im going to port/polish the head and add a mild cam like a 252 comp cams stick. Im going to put a turbo on in the future, but i want it to run good untill then.

So thats the question, should i go with a holley 450 w/ no choke, or a Edelbrock 500?

Also, will 340 valve springs fit a stock slant head?

I run an Edelbrock 500 on my stock 225, along with Clifford intake & headers, MP elect. ignition and MSD Blaster 2 coil. It runs great and has much more power than with the stock intake, carb & exhaust. This setup is in an '83 D150 pickup with auto trans and I don't have any bog at all when I floor it at any speed/rpm. I highly recommend this setup... works great!

In general, you really don't want to be messing with a "no choke" carb of any brand for street use. Start-up and cold engine performance is poor at best, especially in the winter. If you buy a "no choke" carb, you can always put one on later as long as you don't cut the air horn off (Holley). No air horn looks "cool", but I can't imagine how it would provide any significant benefit even for the largest of /6's.

That said, either carb will work. There seems to be a preferance towards the Carter carbs with the Mopar crowd. That said, we have a 570 Holley Street Avenger going on our engine, go figure.

Also, will 340 valve springs fit a stock slant head? Yes I believe they do.

BTW, TOTALLY off topic and for an FYI, keep in mind that 2 bbls' are rated at 2" WC (Water Column) vacuum where 4 bbls' (except for the Holley 390 CFM) are rated at 1" WC. What I am saying is a 500 CFM 2bbl should flow the same as the PRIMARIES on a 500 CFM 4 bbl. Just food for thought.

Thanks guys, im going to get an Edelbrock 500, i tried a 625 Carter today, and it bogs when you floor it. The choke isnt really needed where i live, it gets about 40 at the absolute coldest. I ran my Webers w/o the chokes and never had any problems ever. Thanks for letting me know about the 4/2 bbf CFM ratings, i was thinking of a 500 2bbl, but not now!

Actually, the 500 cfm 4 bbl will have better low rpm drivability, then the 500 cfm 2 bbl. The primary barrels on the 4bbl are smaller then the barrels on the 2bbl, which keeps the air flow up ay low rpm. I have been running the 500 cfm 2bbl, for many years, and it needs a lot of pump shot to cover the hole at low rpm.
